Superintendent outlines next steps in 1-to-1 device planning for Rockingham County schools

Superintendent Dr. Shiflett told the Rockingham County School Board on May 12 that the instructional technology committee has completed a series of stakeholder meetings to gather perspectives on a proposed 1-to-1 device initiative.
Dr. Shiflett said the district ran multiple sessions in April with parents, teachers, principals and instructional leaders to collect benefits and concerns and that facilitators summarized group notes on chart paper. She said the team has compiled all feedback and connected major themes to the division's strategic plan to inform next steps.
"So our next step will be, sharing this with all of those participants... and then we're gonna meet again on May 27," Dr. Shiflett said, adding that the follow-up sessions will be scheduled at times to accommodate different participants. She told the board she expects to return in June or July with proposed parameters or guidelines developed from those discussions.
Dr. Shiflett described typical concerns raised by participants, including device supervision, student workarounds that bypass networks and equitable access, and emphasized the district intends to frame guidelines that address concerns without losing instructional benefits. The district plans to continue collecting input and to present a proposed set of parameters to the board mid‑summer.
The board did not vote on policy at the meeting; this item was presented for information and planning.
