Board approves equipment purchases for two school renovations; Willmark and Singer win bids

The school board approved two procurement items presented by operations and food services staff.

Steve Reid, director of maintenance, explained the need to preorder long‑lead electrical equipment for the McGackiesville Elementary renovation so components arrive in time for next summer’s work. Of three firms solicited, two bids were judged nonresponsive; Reid recommended awarding the allowance to Willmark Electric in the amount of $156,367 to be assigned to the general contractor and written into the specifications. The board approved the recommendation by voice vote (5–0).

Jennifer Williams, director of food and nutrition services, summarized a sealed bid process for food service equipment for Elkton Elementary. Two firms submitted; one was considered unresponsive because it failed to bid on all items. The single responsive bidder, Singer Equipment, submitted a total of $298,247. The board approved following the superintendent’s recommendation; the vote was recorded as 4–0.

Board members asked clarifying questions about responsiveness determinations and whether the preordered equipment would be required of the eventual general contractor; staff said specifications will require the contractor use the planned equipment and that the general contractor will make payment under an allowance clause.
