Key points included keeping a 1:8 chaperone ratio with a minimum of two chaperones for overnight trips, distributing the names of required overnight chaperones to parents at least two weeks before the trip (on permission slips or supplementary materials), and implementing chaperone background checks and training for non‑RCPS volunteers. Members also raised handling of lone students who travel for state officer duties and cultural questions about gender composition of chaperones.
Administration said it would present Draft B for action at the next board meeting and recommended a delayed implementation date (suggested Jan. 1, 2026) to allow time for background checks, training video production and administrative directives clarifying operational details. The superintendent said the district will create a chaperone training video and a short test parents must pass before chaperoning; the administration will also work on clearer operational guidance (car‑pooling expectations, when both chaperones must be present) and will follow up with staff who reported Rooms usability issues.
No formal policy action was taken at the meeting; board members voted to place the revised field‑trip policy on the next meeting agenda for action and to pursue an implementation date that allows adequate preparation.
