Daniel Norris, director of Compass Academy and virtual learning, introduced lead teacher Gina Putney and Compass students who presented a community service project the program runs each year.
Gina Putney described the program’s outreach and volunteer partnerships and framed the project as a way to break up online learning with community engagement. A student presenter explained the campaign’s goals: "This campaign allows them to engage and give back while also focusing on budgeting and planning." Students described contacting partners, posting flyers, fundraising, shopping trips to Walmart and TJ Maxx and coordinating donations to adopt six children referred by the Department of Social Services, ages 1 to 16.
Putney and the students said donated items included two game consoles that reduced expenses for other gifts; the group reported delivering more than 100 gifts during the recent campaign. Staff asked the board and community for volunteer help with next year’s wrapping and delivery efforts.
The presentation highlighted student learning goals — budgeting, planning and community service — and drew praise from board members who noted the positive student engagement.
