New state accountability scores: Matthews High narrowly below 'distinguished'; Thomas Hunter flagged for targeted support

Superintendent Doctor Daniel described the stateframework that rates schools on mastery, growth and readiness and showed division-level results at the Dec. 16 meeting.

Daniel said Matthews High scored a summative index of 89.5 — "half a point" shy of the state 'distinguished' threshold — and therefore is listed as "on track." Matthews Elementary scored 84.6 and Thomas Hunter Middle School scored 84.0; the middle school has one subgroup performing below expectations and is federally identified for "targeted support." Daniel emphasized that some high-school measures use cohort data from prior years and explained the 3E (employment, enlistment, enrollment) component that elevated the high school's readiness score. He warned that growth metrics are calculated off-site and are not predictable by divisions under the current model.

Board members pressed for clarification about 3E scoring bands, licensure and how the new accountability framework differs from accreditation rules; Daniel said the division will produce detailed school-by-school reports for board review and noted the state had delayed public release of some data earlier in the season.

What happens next: the administration will review subgroup performance at Thomas Hunter and develop action plans to address math and reading gaps, and provide supplemental materials to help the public interpret the new metrics.
