Hartford J1 School District trustees voted June 25 to hire Sarah Flitter as the district's new food service director and approved a plan to operate the food service program internally for the 2024–25 school year.
Mr. Majeris presented the recommendation and described a competitive hiring process with six candidates; the board approved the hire by roll call. Majeris said the district has not directly hired a food service director in about 23 years and that moving away from the current contractor will give the district more flexibility over menus and purchasing.
The board also approved a preliminary food service budget that anticipates an operating deficit for 2024–25 but noted the district's current fund balance can cover the shortfall. Majeris said the district will introduce changes gradually, including bringing menu planning and purchasing in-house and assigning staff to key kitchen production roles.
Separately, the board approved a CESA 6 services contract for 2024–25 not to exceed $27,396 to cover learning and assessment membership, evaluation supports, early literacy programming tied to Act 20, and grant support. The board approved the CESA contract on roll call.
Votes on these items were recorded by roll call and carried without opposition.
