Superintendent Tina said the change followed a review of liability and Neola policies from other districts. "Nobody allows students to carry medication," Tina said, adding that the district will keep EpiPens available in multiple locations and ensure staff are trained to respond to emergencies.
Tina told the board staff would change the operational pick-up deadline for leftover medications from "the last day of school" to "within five days of the school year ending," which she described as a process adjustment rather than a change in policy. "We can't hold them over the summer," she said; "if somebody can't pick it up, we'll work through that process so a child doesn't go without emergency medication."
Board members asked about liability and about consistency with past handbooks. One board member had raised concerns during public comment that board policy numbers 5136/5136.01 and the handbook wording were not aligned on possession versus use of devices; the board agreed to review those policy references separately.
A motion to approve the modification of policy 5330 as presented passed on a voice vote.
The board did not publish detailed procedural updates at the meeting; Tina said she would work with district nursing staff to finalize the five-day pick-up process and bring any substantive policy language changes back to the board if needed.
