During the June 23 meeting the board presented a Friend of Education award to Shopko Optical for its partnership in the school-based vision program. Board members said Shopko Optical has provided more than 300 eye exams districtwide; at Nicolet Elementary the vendor provided four days of exams for 91 students, of whom 76 needed new or updated prescriptions and six were referred for follow-up care. Kurt Lauderback of Shopko thanked staff and the volunteer teams that help deliver the program, saying, "It's quite a privilege that we get to do this ... to be able to provide the right eyewear to make students better students."
The board also recognized the first Ambassador Academy cohort — a group of community members who met monthly, completed a book study and provided feedback on district operations. The board thanked Superintendent Vicky Beyer and Education Foundation Chair Eric Vanden Heuvel for their roles in creating the program and invited the cohort forward to receive certificates.
