Board approves cross-country trip to Hawaii for 2026

The Bangor School Board voted to approve a six-day cross-country trip to Hawaii proposed by coach Dan, who said the experience would combine competition and cultural learning. “It is a lifetime experience where they once in a lifetime they can go over there and experience this and also race a 5Ks,” Dan told the board, outlining an itinerary that mixes races with cultural activities.

Dan estimated the per-student cost at about $2,200 to $2,500 and described fundraising plans — including concession stands, raffles and gas cards — to offset expenses. He said the trip would likely take place in September and would require about four missed school days; staff said they would schedule practices and provide time each day for students to check schoolwork.

Board members pressed on logistics and eligibility. A board member asked whether the trip would count as an official meet; administrators said the Washington Interscholastic Athletics Association (WIAA) counts it as one of the team’s meets when sanctioned. The board also discussed whether athletes must commit a year in advance; Dan said students would need to commit the season before travel to ensure appropriate planning.

Lisa moved to approve the overnight field trip to Hawaii in 2026; Kelly seconded the motion. The board approved the trip by voice vote.

The approved motion directs staff to proceed with planning, including finalizing travel arrangements and fundraising. The board did not provide a final per-student price at the meeting; Dan said airfares would be secured through AAA Onalaska if the trip is approved and that a final cost would be presented when arrangements are firmed up.
