Board reviews Stop 24 invasive-plant work, planters and Stop 29 completion

Summary
Board members said PISA and Associates cleared invasive plants at Stop 24 and Stop 19 but recommended delaying new plantings for at least one season; the board also heard that Stop 29 walkway and stairs are near completion and that a large Siberian elm at Stop 24 may need removal per grant requirements.
The Long Beach Park Board discussed recent maintenance and stewardship work at multiple park stops and the need for structural and planting assessments.
Chair (S2) said PISA and Associates performed invasive-plant removal at Stop 24 and Stop 19 late last year and that the board intends to continue stewardship and treatments this summer. He cautioned against planting new vegetation at Stop 24 immediately: "We can't really plant anything in there yet. We need to go probably at least another season and make sure that those invasive plants stay away and eradicate anything that comes up." The chair said replanting should wait until the site is stable so future plantings will have a reasonable chance to establish.
The chair also reported that one grant requirement for redoing Stop 24 calls for removal of a large Siberian elm; a committee member (S5) said Janice will solicit a quote to remove the tree. S5 raised additional concerns about planter timbers under benches and terracing near the parking area and recommended reviewing original engineering documents to confirm whether terracing was installed for structural reasons and to ensure it remains safe.
At Stop 29, the chair said the walkway and stairs have been redone and that an inspection by Larry Wall identified minor items the contractor is addressing; the project is expected to be completed after rechecking.
Why it matters: delaying planting until invasive species are under control reduces the risk of repeated removals and wasted planting expense, while assessing structural planters and terracing protects public safety and asset integrity.
Next steps: Janice (S5 referenced in discussion) will obtain quotes for tree removal; staff will consult engineering records about terracing and inspect planter timbers; PISA and Associates will provide ongoing stewardship through the summer months.
