School board completes annual reorganization after multiple ballots

Goshen County School District #1 held its annual board reorganization during the Dec. 9 meeting, electing a new board chair after several rounds of nominations and votes and installing other officers.
The meeting opened with a motion to adopt the agenda, which passed. The board appointed the superintendent to serve as chair pro tem to run the reorganization and opened nominations for board chair. Multiple trustees were nominated and the board conducted a series of hand votes; the transcript records vote tallies announced by the pro tem and clerk before the board made a final motion to accept the winning nominee and install the chair. Trustee acceptance of nominations was recorded directly during the process.
After the chair election, the board took nominations and voted for vice chair, board clerk and treasurer. The board reported a multi-way tally for vice chair (announced in the meeting as "by a vote of 4 to 1 to 3") and then confirmed the nominated vice chair by motion. Trustees also confirmed the board clerk and appointed Trustee Steinbach as treasurer after a brief explanation of the treasurer's duties and statutory responsibilities for handling warrants and payroll.
In addition to officer elections, the board approved several routine governance items: it designated all banks and lending institutions in the county as depositories for district funds, and it set regular board meetings to occur on the second Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. year-round. The board also appointed trustees to a range of committees including WSBA liaisons, BOCES representatives and the building committee, and clarified which trustees will serve as delegates or alternates for external bodies.
The reorganization proceeded by motions and voice votes; the meeting record indicates motions were moved, seconded and carried for each officer confirmation and schedule change.
The board plans to hold its next regular meeting on Jan. 14, 2025, at LaGrange Elementary School.
