Architect outlines Anna Jarvis replacement school; board may bid base scope with gymnasium alternate
Summary
Design team presented a two‑story, ~64,000 sq ft plan for the new Anna Jarvis school and advised the board that adding the larger gym as drawn would create an estimated $6 million deficit; the team recommended bidding a base, SBA‑funded scope with an alternate for the larger gym.

Architects and the district’s design team presented the board with the completed design‑development concept for the Anna Jarvis replacement and discussed bidding options to manage a projected funding shortfall.
Jonathan Martin of Williams & Shriver walked trustees through a two‑story, roughly 64,000‑square‑foot design that includes dedicated pre‑K and kindergarten classrooms on the ground floor, an academic wing, a STEM/media space adjacent to the main entry, a dining room with stepped access into a music room, and a site plan that maintains operations during construction. The plan intentionally leaves capacity for future classrooms by pouring a second‑floor slab designed to receive four additional rooms if funding permits.
Martin said the district currently faces a planning deficit if it awards the full‑size gymnasium as drawn. "Based upon the SBA's formula and the grant, we're about a $6,000,000 deficit," he told the board, and recommended issuing a base bid that complies with the School Building Authority (SBA) funding rules and listing the larger gym as an alternate that the district could award later if additional funding becomes available.
The design team also proposed phasing to keep the existing building operational during construction and described circulation changes for bus and parent drop‑off during construction. Trustees asked for additional exterior renderings and clarification about parking and distances from Route 50; the architect said dimensions and a more front‑facing rendering could be provided for community outreach.
The board agreed to allow the design team to post preliminary renderings with a disclaimer and directed staff to return with final bid documents and cost estimates as the design team completes construction documents and the estimator finalizes a detailed bid‑takeoff.
Next steps: the design team will finish construction documents, produce a more detailed estimate and submit a bid package to the SBA for required approvals; the board will consider base bid and alternate pricing when bids return.
