Union representative asks Taylor County board to back statewide PEIA resolution over steep insurance changes

Jason Rogers, the new AFT representative for Taylor County, asked the board to consider signing a joint resolution urging state leaders in Charleston to stabilize the Public Employees Insurance Agency (PEIA) and prevent large premium and deductible increases.

Rogers summarized the union's view of the issue: "It's astronomical. I mean, it's a 14% increase on your premiums," he said, adding that deductibles and out-of-pocket maximums are also rising in the plan under consideration. Rogers asked board members to read the resolution and, if willing, sign a copy the board could mail to the governor, the senate president and the speaker of the House before the legislative session begins.

Board members discussed logistics and timing; one member noted the legislature's first session day and urged prompt action. The superintendent offered to accept an electronic copy of the resolution and scan signatures back to the union if board members wished to sign after review. A board member with retiree constituents noted retirees will be affected by changes in later plan years and supported endorsing the resolution.

The board did not vote formally to endorse the resolution during the meeting; members were asked to review the text and provide signed copies to the superintendent's office by the stated deadline if they chose to sign.
