Board approves $1.11 million renovation for Daniels Elementary playground

The Raleigh County Board of Education approved bids totaling $1,114,965 for the Daniels Elementary playground renovation, a multi-part project that includes site preparation, drainage work, new fencing and inclusive play equipment.
Darren Butcher outlined the project and the bid results. Dan Hill Construction was the low bidder for site preparation at $639,115; Burke submitted the low bid for equipment and installation at $475,850. Butcher told the board the project requires extensive drainage work and roughly $140,000 of the site-prep cost is fencing for security and play-area separation. "So, the project, 1 of the bids, your low bid Dan Hill Construction for $639,115 that is for removal of the trees, site development, drainage," he said.
The design moves the current pre-K playground location, adds inclusive features — sensory panels, an inclusive spinner, a four-bay swing and an allied climber — and extends the parent loop to improve traffic flow. Butcher said the current play areas will remain open while construction phases proceed and that the contractor hopes to begin site work immediately; full equipment installation could push into spring, though site prep should be complete in early fall.
Board members asked whether wetland issues would affect the project; staff said the work area is on a different elevation and will not interfere with previously marshy sections. Administration noted smaller playground upgrades are planned at other schools as needed and that the annual playground grant budget (about $300,000) is for routine maintenance, not large-scale renovations like Daniels.
Next steps: administration will proceed with contracting and site mobilization; the district expects phased work with safety measures to keep existing play areas available during fall school opening.
