Board hears facilities update: new chiller, Fairview roof planned and solar pilot discussed

A district staff member gave a facilities and buildings update to the board, reporting progress on several maintenance and capital items and introducing initial planning for energy-efficiency measures.

The staff member said a long-delayed chiller has been craned into place and will soon be hooked up and operational, and that the Fairview Roofing Project is a "big ticket" item slated for the coming summer. The district will solicit bids for the Horizon entryway and other large maintenance work in the upcoming school year.

The staff member also described the district's interest in sustainability measures: replacing lights with LEDs, installing timed light switches across buildings to save energy and pursue applicable energy credits, and "dipping our toes into" solar options. The board discussed potentially piloting solar on an elementary school roof or the multipurpose center if grant funding and sizing analysis make it financially sensible.

On grounds maintenance, the staff member explained that mowing schedules changed this spring after an unexpected death of a maintenance employee who primarily handled mowing duties; temporary help and student summer helpers have been covering work while the district searches to fill the position.

Board members framed the solar conversation as a balance between financial prudence and educational opportunity, noting that any investment could also serve as a learning tool for students. No formal decision or funding commitment was made; the discussion was characterized as an item for future consideration and committee follow-up.
