Roanoke City Council unanimously appoints Dr. Lydia Pettis Patton as interim city manager

Deputy Clerk Wells read a resolution "electing and appointing Dr. Lydia Pettis Patton to serve as interim city manager for the City of Roanoke until such time as council may appoint a permanent city manager and ratifying the terms and conditions of Dr. Lydia Pettis Patton's temporary appointment." A motion to adopt the resolution was moved and seconded and passed on a roll-call vote with each member present answering "Aye."
Before the appointment vote the council returned from a closed meeting convened under Virginia Code §2.2-3711 to discuss a personnel matter. Councilmember Priddy moved that members certify the closed meeting complied with the Virginia Freedom of Information Act — that only lawfully exempted public business was discussed and only matters identified in the motion to convene the closed session were considered. The certification motion passed on a roll-call vote.
After the appointment was approved, Mayor Lee announced Dr. Lydia Pettis Patton was "now serving as the interim city manager" and thanked council members for their support. Mayor Lee said he did not take the confidence for granted and added, "I look forward to us continuing to go forward and working with Dr. Perez," as stated in the meeting record.
The council adjourned the session and said members would reconvene at 1:00.
