Sixth grader Ross Pownell presents state-winning community theater project

Ross Pownell, a sixth grader at Franklin Elementary School, presented his sociology project to the Pendleton County Schools board, describing community theater history, participation and local impacts. He told the board he had placed first in county and regional competitions and had won at the state level.

"I'm a theater kid," Ross said, describing four questions that framed his project: what community theater is, how it started in the U.S., how people participate and what impact theater has on people's lives. He described surveying participants and noted that many respondents had experience in multiple roles behind productions, and that community theater builds confidence and friendships. Ross showed examples of outreach, including a night when rehabilitation-center residents were invited to attend and school classes visited performances.

Board members responded with praise: "You did an outstanding job," one member said, and the board applauded the student. The superintendent used the presentation to recognize National Teacher Appreciation Week and to thank the district's teaching staff for their work.

The board had no questions requiring follow-up; the meeting moved on to routine business after the presentation.
