Board members discussed the May 2026 levy order at the Jan. 27 Summers County Board of Education meeting and agreed the district must receive the final copy from legal counsel before sending it to the treasurer’s office for ballot placement.
A board member said they had sent the levy order to counsel and to an individual named 'Trey' but had not yet received feedback. Members noted that, depending on the timing of counsel’s reply, the board may need a special meeting — which requires two days’ notice — to act in time for ballot placement. One board member reported that the usual cost to place the levy had been waived.
During the discussion, a board member referenced remarks made to the county commission in support of the levy and thanked another member for a “very moving speech” at that meeting. No vote to submit the levy occurred; the board agreed to obtain counsel’s final copy and to schedule a special meeting if necessary.
The board directed the responsible staff member to send the draft levy to board members for preview once counsel returns it, enabling questions before any special meeting. Members emphasized they want the attorney-reviewed document available before formally placing it with the treasurer’s office.
The board plans to follow the statutory notice requirements for any special meeting and to reconvene once the final legal review is complete.
