Ohio County theater students earn state festival awards; 'Class Act' set for Dec. 19

Willard Park High School's theater students attended the West Virginia Theater Association festival, earned distinguished awards and honorable mentions, and will stage their class showcase "Class Act" at 6 p.m. on Dec. 19 with a $3 admission.
Katie Red, theater director at Willard Park High School, told the Ohio County Schools Board that students attended the West Virginia Theater Association Winter Festival at West Virginia Wesleyan College, where workshops and adjudication panels evaluated student performances.
"We attended workshops and classes," Katie Red said, and district students worked with professors from Marshall, WVU, Shepherd University and visiting companies. Red named students who competed and the chaperones and staff who accompanied them.
Board members said the students earned several honors: two awards in props (distinguished and outstanding), an honorable mention for Grace Small in monologue, and recognition for Mo Smith in the monologue category. Four students also participated in unified auditions that could make them eligible for scholarship consideration.
Red said her class will perform "Class Act" at 6 p.m. on Dec. 19 for a $3 admission; the program will include scenes from "Stargirl," "Ticadas," 10-minute plays, songs and dance.
Board members praised the students and coaches and encouraged community attendance. The presentation was part of the meeting's regular agenda of school reports and recognitions.
