Ohio County Schools superintendent reports Central Office flood damage; staff and community ran school shelter

Ohio County Schools Superintendent Doctor Miller told the board on June 23 that the district’s Central Office was severely damaged by a flash flood and that operations were temporarily relocated to Seamrod Elementary School.
Doctor Miller said district staff are "getting rid of all of our materials that have been ruined" and thanked employees, volunteers and the city of Wheeling for assistance. She asked Rick Dunleavy to share his account of emergency sheltering at the school: “We took in at the school, 25 to 30 people that evening,” Dunleavy said, describing buses arranged for transportation, volunteers preparing food and counselors tracking and supporting families.
Board members repeatedly praised staff and community volunteers. Molly, a board member, urged the public to continue long‑term support, noting national and local relief groups staging operations locally: “OV Mutual Aid…Samaritan’s Purse…8 Days of Hope,” she said, and pointed listeners to local staging locations.
Board President announced that the governor sent a $22,000 local economic development grant check for the veterans memorial and read a West Virginia Department of Education letter indicating the district’s audit produced no fines.
Board members and the superintendent emphasized ongoing counseling supports at schools and continuing volunteer coordination as recovery moves from immediate sheltering to longer‑term assistance.
The board then proceeded to personnel and consent agenda items.
