Ohio County superintendent praises robotics, previews special education audit exit comments

The Ohio County Board of Education heard a superintendent's report Feb. 10 in which Superintendent Dr. Miller praised staff and student accomplishments at the Gateway to the West robotics and speech events and summarized preliminary exit comments from a state special education audit.
Dr. Miller told the board that regional competitions drew strong participation and praised staff who helped organize the event. “Miss Shay will present detailed information in our next board meeting, so that if you have questions about the event, you'd get the opportunity to talk to her about,” Dr. Miller said. Board members also noted successes in recent speech and hockey competitions and thanked teachers and coaches for their support.
The superintendent also read selected exit comments from the Department of Education special education audit. Dr. Miller said the audit team praised classroom management, visible administrators, strong career and technical education pathways and supportive services for students. “We have not received a final letter, but I thought it was very important to share with the board some of the exit review comments,” she said. She added that the district’s special education population is “about a fifth of our total population.”
Dr. Miller identified a small number of correctable items, including camera placement in special education classrooms, and thanked staff — including Missus Stout and Dr. Shepherd — for coordinating the audit process. She told the board that the state auditors randomly selected Ritchie Elementary School, Treyoffia Middle School and Wheeland Park High School for on-site review and that district staff will present fuller audit details at the next meeting.
Board members responded with congratulations and community praise for student achievements. Colin (board member) called Gateway to the West “a great signature event” that highlights the district’s robotics program, and other board members noted broad community support. Dr. Miller closed by reiterating appreciation for staff work during an audit cycle that occurs roughly every four years and said the district will share the final audit letter when received.
The board moved on to other agenda items after Dr. Miller’s report; Miss Shay is scheduled to provide a fuller briefing on the Gateway event at the board's next meeting.
