Board celebrates student achievements: state titles and Young Writers winners

The Ohio County Board of Education opened the March 10 meeting with recognition of student achievements.
Officials and board members congratulated state champions and runners-up in wrestling and celebrated the Wheeling Park High School hockey team’s state title and upcoming trip to the national tournament in California. Coach Marcus Black thanked the board for the recognition and noted strong classroom performance among team members: "Here we have 6 players that have higher than a 4.6 GPA, 8 players that have higher than a 4 GPA, and 3 more that have higher than a 3.5 GPA," he said.
Later, Karen Feutzman, director of public relations for Ohio County Schools, presented the Young Writers contest winners for multiple grade divisions, naming students and teachers and inviting finalists to come forward for certificates and a group photo.
Why it matters: The honors highlight extracurricular excellence and student academic achievement. The board does not take formal action on recognitions but included them as a highlight of the evening’s agenda.
