Ohio County students honored for debate, art and athletics

The Ohio County Board of Education honored multiple student and team achievements at its April 14 meeting, spotlighting Wheeling Park High School's speech and debate program, state art winners and standout athletes.
Wheeling Park's speech and debate representatives told the board the team competed in nine tournaments this year, brought home numerous individual awards and "swept debates — every single category we swept," said a team representative. The board and coaches noted the program's consecutive-year state championship streak and praised student dedication and coaching support.
Visual-arts teachers introduced student artists who took local and state awards. Cynthia Stansick, a Philadelphia Middle School teacher, presented Joshua Bill Ronleck and Kenzo Futra for wins at local and state competitions and invited the board and public to the county's Celebration of the Arts at William Clark High School on Thursday.
Athletic recognitions included remarks about Alexis Bortis' record-setting scoring and awards; a coach described her as a "model student athlete," and Bortis thanked the district and community for support. The board also recognized Jameson Maynard, a state wrestling champion who said he plans to attend the U.S. Naval Academy in the fall.
Board members repeatedly framed the recognitions as evidence of strong extracurricular programs across Ohio County Schools and thanked coaches, teachers and families for supporting students.
