Pendleton County school board approves RIFs and a transfer; Gwendolyn Cawley reassigned to Franklin

The approved reductions-in-force list read into the record included the following extracurricular positions and names as presented by the superintendent: Donnie Westwood (extracurricular job exploration coordinator); Serena Harper (extracurricular instructional support mentor); Rebecca Hepner (extracurricular instructional support mentor); Amy Rexrode (extracurricular instructional support mentor); Tanya Worley (extracurricular contract, media specialist); Leah Jones (extracurricular deafness services and case management); Aliyah Wright (communities in school site resource facilitator); Christine Lambert (extracurricular instructional support mentor); Lisonbee Vensell (extracurricular instructional support mentor); Courtney Kimble (extracurricular instructional support mentor, autism services and case management, MS exceptional case manager); Crystal Raymond (extracurricular instructional support mentor); and Corey Wagner (extracurricular instructional support mentor).
After the RIFs, the board approved a transfer: Gwendolyn Cawley was reassigned to an itinerant special-education teacher position with increased service at Franklin Elementary School to meet student needs. Administration said the transfer gives staff and families notice and time to adjust schedules and manage IEP responsibilities.
Board members and administration emphasized that services required by students’ Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) would continue despite the contractual changes cited for extracurricular roles, and that certification changes among special-education teachers have reduced the need for some separate extracurricular positions. The superintendent and board office said contracts and hours will be reviewed at the March board meeting to align funding sources and preserve required services where possible.
The meeting adjourned, and the board announced its next meeting for February 17 at 5:30 p.m.
