Board members recognized the Wheeling Middle School Steel Band Feb. 23 after a presenter announced the group had been selected as one of three WVMEA X Ensemble finalists.
Kaylee Philbin, the band’s teacher, told the board the ensemble — made up of sixth- through eighth-graders — will perform Friday, March 6 at noon in the Charleston Civic Center before an audience of music educators and students. "The Wheeling Middle School Steel Band has been selected as this year's X Ensemble finalist," she said, noting the group received the highest score among the three finalists whose recordings were judged anonymously.
Board members praised Philbin and the students, asked them to stand for recognition, and wished them luck at the performance. The board encouraged local coverage of the event and community support for the students.
