Gilmer County Schools honors students and CTE teams; Lady Titans present state trophy

The Gilmer County Schools board opened its March meeting with a series of student recognitions, awarding certificates to winners of the young writers competition, regional math field day participants and students who attended Governor’s School and leadership programs.
Staff read names and accomplishments, honoring students including Emily Frederick, Lacey Hutchinson, Hunter Workman, Jesse Jones and Dustin Harper for writing prizes and listing Remington Huffman, Katie Martin and Jeremiah McCune among regional math participants. The board also acknowledged students selected for Governor’s School and the Hugh O’Brien Youth Leadership program.
Career and technical education (CTE) accomplishments were highlighted. The Marshall University Health Occupation Students Association awards were announced for creative problem solving and other HOSA competitions; staff noted this school’s first group competition win for the career center. A staff presenter described new equipment and hands-on projects in the animal processing and meat lab programs, including a new label scale to improve student packaging and inspection compliance.
“We were honored. This was the first group competition that our career center has ever won,” one presenter said, describing CTE students’ work and the pride staff felt in their achievements.
District leaders also recognized All-State band selections (including Mirelli Monroe) and invited the Lady Titan basketball team to present their trophy from a recent event in Charleston; board members discussed plans to present the trophy to the Board of Education and pursue recognition at the state legislature on April 7 if scheduling allows.
Board members and staff described the breadth of activities supporting student opportunities — from a STEAM fair with roughly 30 stations and about 350 participants to volunteer-supported events and donor contributions — and praised the programs’ role in classroom and community engagement.
The meeting’s awards segment closed with plans to post photos on the district website and follow up with additional recognitions at upcoming events.
