Harrison County school board approves bus purchases, adopts 2026–27 calendar and OKs Army internship

The Harrison County Board of Education voted Dec. 16 to approve several routine and operational items including a multi-unit bus purchase, the 2026–27 school calendar and an internship agreement with the Army Careers Program.
Chair (speaker S2) moved and the board approved the consent agenda by voice vote after a brief member question about a listed student transfer and whether it involved a HOPE voucher. The board then discussed and voted to table an out-of-state travel and study request for seven participants so staff can provide estimated costs at the next meeting.
On transportation, the board recommended issuance of purchase orders to Bloomberg Bus Sales for a mix of buses including 77-passenger and 47-passenger units. Board members asked about specialized floor plans to accommodate wheelchairs and about delivery fees; the motion carried by voice vote.
The board approved an agreement with the Army Career Skills Program for an individual internship tied to the JROTC program at Robertson Varad School, effective Feb. 15–May 15, 2026. Board members asked whether the internship imposed any cost on the district; staff said it does not.
On the school calendar, the board debated two drafts. One member said Calendar 1 begins teacher duties Aug. 11 with students starting Aug. 18 and results in the last instructional day immediately after Memorial Day; another member called Calendar 2, with a later start, “instructionally better.” The board voted to deny Calendar 2 and adopt Calendar 1 as the official 2026–27 calendar.
Personnel recommendations from the superintendent, including the abolishing of a music position and a reconfigured health-teacher role with a social-services focus, were presented and approved after members sought clarification on duties. The board moved into and later returned from an executive session to consider property matters under state law before adjourning.
