Gilmer County board delays decision on 2026 graduation date after athletics conflict concerns

The Gilmer County Board of Education voted on May 12 to postpone final action on the 2026 high school graduation date to allow more stakeholder input.
Superintendent Doctor Minnie told the board she had identified three options to avoid clashes with state track and postseason baseball/softball: hold graduation May 21 during the school day, move it to Sunday May 24 (Memorial Day weekend), or keep the current date and risk student conflicts. ‘‘If we leave it, I have the schedule here, and we have baseball regionals May 25–30 and track May 22–23,’’ she said, noting that at least 11 students could be affected by certain dates.
Board members debated tradeoffs: a weekday daytime ceremony would allow faculty presence but require some families to take time off work; a Sunday ceremony would avoid athletic conflicts but fall on a holiday weekend with travel. One board member noted the burden on working families and suggested surveying affected families and juniors.
After discussion, S6 moved to postpone the item for one month to gather input; the motion was seconded and approved by voice vote. The board asked staff to solicit feedback from seniors, junior parents and coaches and to bring the item back at the next meeting for a formal decision.
