School board approves grouped policy updates but excludes AI policy PO 5505

The Brooke County Schools board approved a package of policy updates on motions taken during its regular session while removing a proposed AI policy from the package.

During consideration of several administrative policy updates pulled from the MiOLA legal platform, a board member raised questions about the district’s approach to a Personal Electronic Device (PED) policy and about an AI policy identified as PO 5505. A district presenter said the PED rule would allow devices to be used at breakfast and lunch but required that students keep devices stored in lockers during classroom hours. “They are going to allow them to use them at breakfast and lunch, but they’re storing them in their lockers throughout the day,” the presenter said when asked about enforcement and exceptions such as wearable devices.

Board members discussed practical enforcement questions — including whether wearable devices such as smartwatches would be covered — and whether certain policy language needed local adjustment after the platform’s automatic updates. The presenter said many updates were grammatical or jurisdictional (for example, language using “county” rather than “district”) and that the district would tweak options in the platform before finalizing administrative guidelines.

A board member moved to approve the package but amend it to exclude PO 5505; the amendment carried and the remaining policies were approved by unanimous voice vote. The meeting record shows the board voted “Aye” with no recorded opposition on the grouped approvals.

The board asked administration to circulate the final policy drafts and any additional administrative guidelines for members to review. The district indicated it would supply copies of the PED policy and the AI-related policy text for further consideration.
