Wilmot UHS explores later school start times after transportation talks

A representative from a transportation provider, cited by the superintendent as Larry Kirkley of Dawson Transport Company, described the district's current two-tier bus runs and the possibility that moving to a three-tier routing could reduce costs.
The superintendent said the proposed change would likely be modest — about an hour to an hour and a half later — and stressed the student-health rationale: “Science clearly shows that older kids should start later,” she said. Board members raised logistical concerns, including impacts on early-release sporting events, extracurricular activities and a CNA class run through Gateway that begins before the regular school day.
The superintendent proposed giving the community one to two years' notice if the districts decide to pursue a change and suggested surveying current and future parents for input. She also asked administrators from feeder and neighboring districts to discuss whether they would be open to aligning schedules.
No formal decision was made. Next steps include continued inter-district conversations and, if there is interest, a community survey and further logistical analysis.
