Wilmot staff propose 2025–26 calendar: no fall break, full Thanksgiving week off and weeknight graduation

District staff presented the proposed 2025–26 school year calendar and explained the rationale for several scheduling changes. The draft moves the start of professional staff days so students begin after a full week of staff preparation, proposes a freshman-only day before Labor Day, and shifts the first student day to Sept. 2 (the day after Labor Day).
A notable change is eliminating a separate "fall break" and instead scheduling the full Thanksgiving week off, a move staff said would maximize instructional time and reduce pattern absences the district sees around the holiday. Parent–teacher conference scheduling would change so the day after conferences is an instructional day, staff said. The draft also proposes a weeknight graduation (June 5) to leave graduation weekend open for family events; teachers would return for a final professional day on June 8.
Staff noted three inclement-weather days are built into the calendar; if more are needed the district may use an in-service day or extend the school day. Board members asked about the decision not to use remote learning to make up snow days; staff said they do not support remote learning on snow days, calling it "not a quality day of instruction." The calendar was presented as the proposed draft and will be on the agenda for approval at the Nov. 20 meeting.
