Board adopts 2025–26 school calendar and circulates candidate packets ahead of April board election

The Wilmot UHS School District board approved the district calendar for the 2025–26 school year and discussed the schedule for the April board elections.

Staff presented the calendar draft, noting several changes: the district proposes a Freshman Only Day before Labor Day (Sept. 2), recommends the full week of Thanksgiving be nonattendance days because Monday and Tuesday typically have low attendance, and anticipates a two-week winter break in part because of how the holidays fall in the calendar year. Staff also recommended moving graduation from a Sunday morning to a Friday night to align with many conference schools and provide families Saturday and Sunday for gatherings.

Student government representatives reacted positively to a full week at Thanksgiving and the Friday-night graduation proposal. The presenter said teacher input was solicited and feedback has been mostly positive while acknowledging tradeoffs in how days off are distributed across the year.

On elections, staff said two three-year board seats will be on the April ballot—one seat currently vacant and one seat held by a member who filled a midterm vacancy. Candidate packets and a cover letter were prepared and the filing deadline was set for Jan. 7; staff said they will accept forms in the office until 5 p.m. that day.

Why it matters: Calendar decisions affect family planning, instructional scheduling and extracurricular timing, and the election schedule sets the public timeline for prospective candidates.
