Gilmer County Schools proposes 'Titan Legacy' award to honor longtime coaches, staff and teachers

Dr. Manning (speaker S2) said the award would recognize coaches, teachers, service personnel and athletic trainers who worked in Gilmer County Schools for at least 10 years and who had team or individual achievements such as state championships, multiple regional appearances or equivalent conference-level success. The proposal sketches a selection process: nomination forms, a scoring matrix, and a committee made up of a high school principal, the athletic director, a classroom teacher, a service personnel representative and one board member. Inductees would receive a lifetime athletic pass, be publicly recognized at local events and have their names affixed to a plaque at Gilmer County High School.
"This is also recommended for somebody that demonstrated exceptional influence on student growth and development in both academic and athletics," the superintendent said, describing the award's purpose as reconnecting past contributors with current students and building school culture. He added the district hopes to identify one or two honorees each year and to induct them before the fall sports season.
Board members discussed widening eligibility so older-era coaches who lacked regional or state championships would still qualify; the superintendent suggested allowing conference championships as an alternate criterion. One board member (speaker S6) urged a parallel academic legacy award to honor influential teachers; the superintendent said that academic fellowship is planned as well. Staff and board members also discussed nomination volume, committee scoring and the possibility that some years yield no inductees.
Next steps in the proposal include finalizing nomination forms, convening the selection committee in June and returning the item to the board for formal adoption of criteria and an implementation timeline. The idea remains at the proposal stage pending those next administrative steps.
No formal vote on adopting the program occurred during the meeting.
