Wilmot staff propose 14 summer-school courses, add intermediate piano and course-title changes

District staff presented proposed summer-school courses and a plan to use both in-district and outside instructors to run academic and enrichment options next summer.
Crowell introduced the revisions, saying the lineup mixes required classes such as financial foundations with electives like cooking, music and auto basics. Crowell noted one new course — intermediate piano — and several title changes intended to better reflect content (for example, a strings/orchestra offering is being reframed to emphasize guitar). Crowell said many title changes do not imply content change but aim to help students understand course focus.
Crowell said the district has circulated a document to staff to determine instructor interest and will share full course descriptions with the board ahead of the December 18 vote. "The 14 additional course options will be up for board approval at the December 18 meeting," Crowell said. Staff also discussed using virtual components when helpful and noted the program seeks to connect students with teachers who generate enrollment through relationships.
Board members praised the variety and asked whether larger enrollment would justify expanding summer-session hours; staff said they will monitor demand and can adjust the schedule. The board did not vote on course approvals at this meeting; the item will return on Dec. 18 with full course descriptions.
Crowell also noted adaptive performing-arts sections, a peer-support theater class for some special-education students, and an expectation of a small performance scheduled in January for family and administration.
If the board approves the December recommendations, staff will open course requests through Skyward as part of the regular scheduling cycle.
