Oak Hill teacher describes using $3,000 classroom grant to expand student music program

At the Fayette County Board of Education meeting Dec. 16, Oak Hill High School teacher Tim Haney described how a $3,000 grant awarded through the Education Alliance and Kanawha Valley Foundation will support a student music program called 'School Rock.'
Haney recounted starting the program in 2014 and said it grew from a club into a recurring family‑engagement show. "We met once a week, sometimes twice a week... many of these kids do not have very decent instruments," Haney said, adding that grant funds will help purchase instruments and make the program more sustainable.
Haney said the program provides a place for students to participate and develop musical and social skills, and that faculty at Oak Hill High School have been supportive. He also noted plans for spring shows and additional family involvement.
Miss Dooley announced the list of grant recipients and said the district had nearly 30 applicants for the competitive grant round. The board thanked Haney and other recipients and accepted a group photo and certificate presentations.
The presentation underscored the district’s use of competitive local grants to support classroom needs and extracurricular programming.
