District to launch 'Speak Up, Speak Out' tip line for students before Thanksgiving

School counselor Samantha McArvey told the Silver Lake J1 School District board the district will roll out the 'Speak Up, Speak Out' threat-reporting system—an initiative created with the Department of Justice’s Office of School Safety—to students and families before Thanksgiving.
"Speak Up, Speak Out is just a new initiative that we are really trying to get up and running this year related to school and student safety," McArvey said. She described the program as a free, 24/7 tip line accessible by web, app, text or phone that routes reports to a DOJ resource center and, when necessary, to law enforcement.
McArvey said the district planned to introduce the system in fourth- through eighth-grade classrooms and to send communications to families and staff so they understand how to use it responsibly. "We would love to have it kind of up and running with our students before Thanksgiving break," she said.
Board members who had used similar systems in other organizations praised the program as an additional layer of safety. There was no formal board vote on the item; counselors Becky and Samantha will coordinate rollout steps and communications.
