Board hears update on benefits advisory committee after long-time lead resigns

The Silver Lake J1 School District board discussed staffing and next steps for its ad hoc benefits advisory committee, and staff reported the committee's longtime lead has resigned, leaving the review temporarily on hold.
A committee member recommended that Vicky be involved based on her past experience negotiating contracts. "I would like to see Vicky, if you wouldn't mind being involved with your past experience, negotiating contracts," the committee member said.
District staff said the lead who had been guiding the committee resigned after more than 20 years of service and that the district is working with a new staff person; staff said Sue has been doing extra work to bring the replacement up to speed. Because the benefits advisory committee is an ad hoc committee of the board, staff said meetings must be posted to the public. The staff member stated the posting makes attendance by board members legal and that the meetings will be open to the public once scheduled.
Board members discussed whether other board members could attend posted committee meetings and noted quorum considerations; staff confirmed that posting the committee meetings allows board members to come and listen without creating an improper gathering, subject to open-meeting rules.
The board did not take a formal vote or make assignments during the discussion; staff said it will schedule committee meetings once staffing is settled and will post notices as required.
