Mukwonago board approves $625,000 Daktronics video scoreboard, contingent on village approval

The Mukwonago School District board voted Feb. 24 to approve purchasing a Daktronics video scoreboard for the high school stadium, contingent on approval from the Village of Mukwonago plan commission.
Finance and facilities director (speaker 7) told the board the all‑in cost — scoreboard, installation, electrical work and necessary fiber optics — is $625,000 and that roughly $390,000–$400,000 in private donations has been raised so far. The district and fundraising team told the board they expect to close the remaining sponsorship commitments to reach about $515,000 in committed sponsor revenue; the motion approved asked that the district front the purchase and be repaid via sponsorships over an approximately five‑year period.
Presenter Andy Bridal (speaker 13), who described conversations with other area programs and businesses, recommended Daktronics for its industry track record and for an accompanying curriculum that staff say can be integrated into the district’s sports marketing and AV coursework. "Daktronics is considered to be the best in the industry," Bridal said, adding that the company provides training and sponsor‑acquisition support.
Board members asked several logistical and financial questions before the vote, including alternate placement of the board to reduce fiber and electrical runs, expected lifespan and warranty, and whether the district could recoup value via sponsorship. The presenters said the video‑board panels are modular — individual sections can be replaced — and that Daktronics’ standard warranty is five years. The presenters estimated a typical life of 10 to 15 years. The sponsor program includes a 7% in‑kind kickback through the district’s vendor BSN to be spent on uniforms, equipment and branding, not as a cash rebate.
The board made the purchase contingent on the plan commission approving the proposed placement; staff said they would seek plan commission approval and, if the commission requires relocation, return to the board on March 17 with information and options. The board and staff targeted a June installation so the board could be operational by mid‑August and the start of the fall sports season.
The motion passed on a voice vote; members answered "aye" and the chair declared the motion approved. The agenda item will move forward only after the village plan commission provides final approval of the proposed site.
