Committee approves recommendation to advance Wausau's 2025-26 Academic and Career Plan

The Wausau School District Education Operations Committee recommended that the full board approve the district's 2025-26 Academic and Career Plan (ACP), which aims to expand career and technical education (CTE), apprenticeships and credentialing.
John Winter, the district's career and technical education coordinator, presented an overview of ACP activities and goals. "Last year 204 students earned industry credentials in the Wausau School District," Winter said, noting that the number represents a new district record and includes 61 certified nursing assistant credentials.
Winter outlined recent student events and partnerships, including the Wisconsin Education Fair, the Build My Future field trip and an eighth-grade Heavy Metal Tour connecting students with manufacturing employers. He also described a pilot pre-apprenticeship for electricians with Newton Electric and union partners that would allow students to complete one year of adult apprenticeship curriculum while in high school.
Board members questioned how the district will scale apprenticeships, involve industries such as plumbing and HVAC, and measure success. Winter said the ACP team will use the district's comprehensive local needs assessment (CLNA) surveys of students, staff and families to help define metrics and that some measurement plans remain under development.
The chair moved to recommend approval of the ACP plan, citing administrative rule PI 26.04; the committee seconded and approved the recommendation by voice vote. Staff said the plan is the same as the previous year's plan but with an adjusted approval timeline to better align program work with the school year. The item will go to the full board for formal adoption.
