District administrator: Viroqua school construction largely on track despite rain and interior disruptions

The district administrator provided a detailed May owner’s report on the Viroqua Area School District construction project, saying major milestones — concrete footings, structural masonry and steel framing — are complete across multiple additions, and crews are averaging 30–35 workers on site.

The administrator noted that the elementary secured entrance now has structural steel and that restroom finishes are nearing partition installation. The TechEd foundation and a larger two‑story middle school addition are in place, though the administrator cautioned that recent rain has produced interior water intrusion in unfinished spaces and that soil conditions are slowing exterior work.

On schedule expectations, the administrator said some portions of TechEd will not be fully available at the start of the school year: "TechEd is a little bit different because we know we're not gonna have all of that wing back by, you know, the start of school in the fall. We hope to have about half of it back at the beginning of the school year." Board members were briefed on temporary logistics, adjusted site access and the need for dry weather to close building envelopes.

Why it matters: Continued progress on construction drives next year’s learning-space capacity and safety upgrades, but wet weather and worker availability for specialized trades (masons, for example) can shift timelines and require temporary operational changes.

Next steps: Staff will continue posting photos and updates to the district website, monitor weather impacts, coordinate temporary office accommodations and report schedule changes to the board.
