Viroqua board reviews first readings of dozens of updated policies, including graduation and nondiscrimination changes

The Viroqua Area School District board on Aug. 14 received a comprehensive first reading of dozens of policy updates covering educational outcomes, attendance, graduation requirements, food service, transportation and personnel procedures.
A staff member (S2) outlined the packet and said the educational outcomes policy (2131) was updated to incorporate language from the 2023 Wisconsin Act 266, which amends state statute language to include references to Hmong and Asian Americans. S2 also said policy 5460 now references a newly enacted 0.5‑credit financial literacy requirement for high school graduation and that attendance policy 5200 was revised to add instances of excused absences required by state law.
Other first‑reading highlights included streamlined dietary‑accommodations language and a requirement to appoint a dietary‑accommodations coordinator in food‑service policy 8500; movement of transportation language into the district‑sponsored trip policy with rescission of policy 8640; clarified substitute employment and co‑curricular hiring procedures; and updates to search‑and‑seizure procedures and employee leave for subpoenaed testimony.
Board members thanked staff for a thorough packet and asked routine clarifying questions; the items are at first reading and will return for a second reading and final action at a future meeting.
What to watch: The financial literacy credit and the nondiscrimination language tied to state law are policy changes that will affect graduation requirements and student services if adopted after the second reading. The policies were presented for first reading; the board did not take final action on the policies at this meeting.
