Board hears legal update on School Forest and approves seclusion/restraint report showing zero incidents

The board received two compliance and legal updates Aug. 21: an annual seclusion and restraint report and a status update on ongoing litigation concerning the School Forest Camp property.
A staff member reported that the district recorded zero incidents of seclusion or physical restraint during the 2023–24 school year; the board moved to approve the required report, and the motion carried unanimously. Board members credited staff training (including verbal de-escalation and NBCI training) and positive culture as factors in preventing incidents.
On the School Forest Camp matter, the administrator said the district’s appeal was denied and the district’s attorney, Ron Stadler, is preparing the district’s response to petitioners. The board was told that the district must either continue litigation (with the possibility that development on the property will remain constrained while the case proceeds) or accept a ruling that could limit future development on district property. The board requested clarification from counsel about what work — if any — may proceed on the property (educational uses, parking, trails) while litigation is pending.
No new vote was taken on litigation; the administrator said the district will seek further legal guidance and report back to the board.
