Principals say May 6 bond would direct nearly 85% of Phase 2 funds to Smith and Harmon elementary schools

Cassie Schock, principal at Smith Elementary, and Sarah Patterson, principal of Harmon School, told listeners the district’s Phase 2 master facilities plan would concentrate resources on the two elementary schools if a bond measure on May 6 is approved. "If the bond issue on May 6 is approved, nearly 85% of the funding will be allocated to Smith and Harmon elementary schools," Schock said.
The principals described a set of infrastructure projects intended to bring the two aging school buildings up to current safety and technology standards. Schock noted that "Smith was built in 1929," and Patterson said Harmon occupies the original Oakwood School building, which opened in 1908, underscoring the age of both facilities.
Under the proposal, Smith and Harmon would receive centralized heating and air conditioning systems to replace window units and radiators, upgrades Schock said are expected to "improve temperature control and energy efficiency." Both buildings would also get new ceilings, updated LED lighting and a modern fire alarm system to meet current safety codes.
Patterson outlined additional work included in the Phase 2 plan: electrical upgrades to support modern classroom technology, roofing repairs, masonry restoration and removal of any hazardous materials encountered during construction. Schock added that bathroom renovations would address restrooms left untreated in Phase 1, and that Smith would receive new gym partitions and bleachers to improve safety and functionality for sports and performances.
The principals tied the Phase 2 work to earlier improvements, saying technology updates at Oakwood Junior High and Senior High were completed in Phase 1 and that Phase 2 would continue that effort for younger students.
