Commissioners on the built environment committee reviewed the remaining balance in the city’s solar-rebate account and discussed outreach and possible expansion of the rebate program.
David Bookless, the commission’s staff liaison, said the balance was about $21,000 and noted continuing resident interest: “Around 21,000. We’re still getting people asking for it, but it’s not a big payout for folks,” he said. Commissioners said they had sent emails to licensed electricians doing business in Webster Groves, posted a window sign, updated the website and produced a video to help get the word out.
Karen Anderson (commission member) said the committee planned to ask city council to consider expanding the program to include EV chargers and to review whether some marketing funds might be available. Staff cautioned that marketing requests would need to be included as part of a formal budget request to council; one commissioner asked whether council could reassign funds and staff said council has the authority to allocate money.
The discussion also touched on how the solar-rebate money is treated administratively; one commissioner noted constraints on reallocating surplus rebate funds, and staff said they would clarify the allowable uses with council before any reallocation is recommended.
Next steps: staff will confirm the exact remaining balance, clarify administrative constraints on rebate funds with council, and prepare language and budget requests for the commission’s FY27 submission if members want to pursue marketing or program expansion.
