Trustees urged to push state lawmakers as federal block-grant plan discussed

Miss Goodwin reported that she attended a federal advocacy conference in Washington, D.C., where congressional staff indicated a possible move toward converting certain federal education funds into state-controlled block grants. "We need to keep it the way that it is now, because if they do that, we might not get what we're supposed to get," Miss Goodwin said, urging local outreach to Columbia.
Mister Sailors echoed the concern and said the advocacy committee will develop a strategy for trustees to individually contact their counterparts in the state general assembly before it reconvenes in January. "Advocacy committee will be working on a strategy for us individually to reach out to our counterparts in the general assembly before they return in January," he said.
Board members did not take formal action on funding policy at the meeting; the remarks were presented as a committee report and direction for the advocacy committee to prepare outreach plans.
