Elizabeth Forward superintendent praises staff as high school reopens; board reviews change orders and contingency

Superintendent Pollock told the Elizabeth Forward School District Committee of the Whole on Sept. 10 that returning students to classrooms after a long renovation was the district’s top priority and thanked administrators, custodial and construction teams for getting the high school ready on schedule.
"This year was even more important as we were able to get our kids back to the high school on time," Pollock said, praising district administrators, teachers and contractors for work done during a compressed schedule.
District staff reviewed multiple pending change orders for the high school renovation. The project presenter identified a Rycon change order for $3,926.35 that covers parapet/roof framing and a revised ADA threshold and said the board will move that item onto next week’s agenda for formal consideration. Staff emphasized the ADA threshold itself was a small portion (about $329) of the Rycon amount.
Staff also described several other pending items: ceiling-tile work tied to mechanical work that may net to zero if the mechanical contractor offsets the cost; plumbing and storm piping revisions that required coring steel; electrical items related to replacing old exhaust fans and associated wiring; and a $2,800 change order for additional admin outlets.
On finances, staff said roughly 26.23% of the project contingency has been used, leaving about $2.22 million remaining; total change orders represent about 1.31% of the project and the board’s contingency target is 5%.
One larger retaining-wall request remains on hold while the district seeks input from the gas company about relocating a gas line; staff said that decision could change scope and cost but did not provide a final savings estimate pending the gas company’s response.
Project staff provided a timeline for remaining work: window deliveries and rooftop-unit set installations targeted around Sept. 20, punch-list and fire-alarm work continuing on second shift, and a temporary gas tie for the pool heater expected to be started imminently. Staff said the gym is expected to be ready by January, with the auditorium and other areas finished next school year.
The board did not vote on the Rycon item in the Sept. 10 meeting; staff indicated the change order request would appear on the upcoming meeting agenda for formal action.
