District reports modest enrollment increase and staffing needs; West 2 special‑education demand high

During the July 8 workshop, Chair David presented the district’s annual enrollment and staffing summary for the 2023–24 school year. He said total district enrollment was 600 students, an increase of 17 from the previous year. Elementary enrollment finished the year at 320 students, while the junior–senior high had 280 students. David said West 2 reported 47 enrolled students (11 listed as inactive) and that the program’s stated capacity is 60.
David outlined staff counts across the district: administrators 6, cafeteria workers 11, custodial/maintenance 13, school nurses 2, secretaries 6, teachers 66, counselors 3 and other support roles. He said the district will continue hiring work that is already underway and has nine interviews scheduled with the hiring committee that will make recommendations at the July 15 meeting; the district hopes to hire three new elementary teachers and fill social studies and other open positions.
On special education, David said West 2 was expected to serve roughly 40% special-education students but is currently running about 80% and the program will be near its 60-student capacity in fall. "We definitely need to add at least one more special education teacher up there at the program," he said. The district signaled the vacancy advertising and candidate interviews will continue before the next board meeting.
The board did not take a formal hiring vote at the workshop; the hiring committee will present recommendations at the July 15 voting session.
