West 2 program handbook, calendar and graduation pathways updated ahead of July vote

Chair David opened the workshop by reviewing proposed updates to the West 2 program handbook and calendar and said the changes will be presented for a face-to-face vote on July 15. The board was told the West 2 program will follow a 180-day calendar (Aug. 1–June 30) with a plan to add three five-day weeks at the end of grading periods so the program meets the 180-day requirement.
David said the district added Juneteenth as a student holiday at West 2 and revised orientation and testing procedures to ensure new students complete records, initial packets and, when possible, required assessments such as PSAs and Keystone exams. He described the course offerings for West 2 as including English, social studies, math, science, health, physical education and electives, with vocational and engineering options available.
On graduation, David outlined three pathways available to West 2 students: a Commonwealth diploma, an AC Valley West 2 diploma requiring 21 credits, or a homeschool diploma. He said the West 2 diploma totals 21 credits distributed across core and elective subjects (example breakdown presented by district staff) to allow students who arrive with previous credits to pursue a tailored graduation plan. David noted that promotion thresholds differ from the district’s main campus (the district’s standard pathway requires 24 credits). "The big thing really is the 21 credits," he said, describing the change as intended to clean up graduation pathways and ensure accurate information is provided to students.
A committee member asked how senior project requirements (community service or job shadowing) would be achieved for West 2 students. David replied that every West 2 student who has graduated (he cited six graduates) completed a senior project, often focused on career exploration and completed mostly online; students present their projects to the West 2 leadership team.
The handbook revisions and calendar corrections will be formally presented for approval at the July 15 voting meeting; the board will consider the final language and any additional staff clarifications at that time.
