George Dewey, president and CEO of Aston, opened the ceremonial groundbreaking for Catawba Ridge and welcomed attendees to the project in Fort Mill. "We're proud to welcome you to, the groundbreaking Catawba Ridge," Dewey said, framing the milestone as an important step after years of early-stage work.
Mayor Gwen Savage welcomed the development, saying Fort Mill seeks "managed and quality" growth. "Absolutely thrilled to be here and welcome this project to Fort Mill," Mayor Gwen Savage said, and she thanked town staff by name, including Town Manager Carrie Vargo and assistant managers Chris Pettit and Gordon Burnett, for their role in securing the partnership.
Dewey described Aston as a Charlotte-based developer with more than 45 years in retail-property development and said the firm values building close to its home market. He also noted a long-standing partnership with Harris Teeter dating to 2000 (and family ties to earlier leases), and he introduced Dana Robinson to speak for Harris Teeter.
"Harris Teeter is proud to be the local grocery retailer of The Carolinas," Dana Robinson said, describing the planned store as a "fresh, modern shopping experience" with expanded departments and convenient service. Robinson added that Harris Teeter donates "more than $20,000,000 in food and funds to the neighborhoods that we serve" each year.
The program concluded with a ceremonial shovel dig; Dewey named those invited to the ceremonial dig, including Mayor Savage, Dana Robinson, Barnes Connell (managing partner, Aston Realty Investment Company) and Ted Barnes.
The transcript of the event did not provide a date or time for the ceremony. The remarks in this report are drawn from the recorded remarks by Aston, Harris Teeter and Mayor Savage during the ceremonial groundbreaking.
