Bethel Park SD previews 270,000‑square‑foot elementary, pledges no staff cuts ahead of Aug. 2026 opening

Jim Walsh, superintendent of Bethel Park School District, opened a community presentation on the district's new Bethel Park Elementary School and told attendees the building is designed to open in August 2026. He described a project themed on national-park motifs and said the district intends to preserve staff and programs through the consolidation of six existing elementary schools into the single new facility.

The new school is roughly "270 some thousand square feet," Walsh said, and will be organized so the large building feels smaller to students through an administrative model that places an overall principal plus three unit principals in charge of grade-band "ecosystems." "The board's made this promise that nobody's gonna get furloughed or nobody losing jobs," Walsh said, framing the consolidation as an operational change that will not cut positions.

District officials said designers and community partners shaped the layout. The architectural firm Dra Collective led building plans, and staff worked with the Pittsburgh Children's Museum, Pittsburgh Botanic Garden and student design charrettes to refine playgrounds, circulation and learning spaces. Mandy Figlioli, assistant to the superintendent for elementary education, walked attendees through a virtual floor-by-floor tour highlighting a secure vestibule, a commons with a 600-plus seat auditorium, two cafeterias (one for younger students and one for older students) and numerous flexible learning areas.

The plan includes three STREAM labs (STREAM is Bethel Park's version of STEAM with an added R for resourcefulness), an outdoor classroom called the NatureLab, a rooftop garden and a media center with audio/video recording space. Figlioli said students, teachers and parents provided input on furniture, classroom arrangements and playground design through workshops and charrettes.

Walsh and other presenters said the district still has work to do on operational details — timing of transitions, swing spaces and event logistics — but reiterated next steps: continued community engagement, staff transition planning throughout the coming year and preparation for the scheduled August 2026 opening. The presentation closed with a public question-and-answer session and an invitation to submit questions by email.

The district did not propose any formal votes during the meeting; the session served as an informational public briefing and Q&A.
